We chose X.org, so as to be the same as the other flavors. Other than that, Edubuntu’s support overhead is minimal. Overall, the experience has been much better for the moderators and the users alike. If you like Flatpak – and a lot of people do – then you needn’t worry. The Flatpak tooling will remain in Ubuntu’s repositories, so you will be able to add it back in very easily, as described on Flathub.

It includes a simple, customizable desktop built with many personalization options and features for extra spice. You can customize hundreds of settings, add and install new desktop widgets (known as plasmoids), change the look and feel of the desktop, customize the toolbar, and so on. The following webpage lists the popular and well-known unofficial Ubuntu flavors. The GPL license allows everyone to modify, strip down, build upon, extend, and embed any part of Ubuntu. It also allows them to distribute the original Ubuntu with those changes or modifications. A customized or modified version of the original Ubuntu is known as the Ubuntu Flavor.

I agree with the idea of replacing “ask-ububtu” with “help and Support” on discourse. It is the logical thing to do.It took a little while to adapt to the new forum software and now that I am a bit more used to it find I like it. Just need the volunteers to come with those other flavors that know the particulars for each flavor. Stack Exchange seems to be in a state of eternally melting down. unofficial Ubuntu I don’t think I’ve seen a month go by where there wasn’t some new change that got massive negative feedback, lots of upset mods, etc. We can also create wikis here that might be helpful for people to view, so I think this may be a boon to our users.

The reason I labeled which ones “exist” is because I want people to be aware of what they would not be able to do. Yes, you could technically make your own Xubuntu or Ubuntu Lumina but I am 100% sure the devs would not take kindly, or the community for that matter. Anyways this is split up into two sections, “Specialty” and “Desktop Look”. Like Ubuntu Studio or Ubuntu Kylin, “Specialty” versions have pre-installed software for specific use cases. Like the rest, “Desktop Look” is for desktop environments.

In a day or so, we plan to return to this theme and take a look at some of the main unofficial flavors. In direct terms, the less RAM and disk space your desktop uses, the more you have free for your own stuff. Secondly, desktops which are more frugal in resource usage are generally quicker and more responsive. That in turn means they run better on older, lower-spec computers. That’s highly relevant because a popular use case for Linux is reviving an old PC whose copy of Windows is too outdated and sluggish to be useful any more.

Community

It made a lot of customization to reduce the usage of system resources. For example, it uses PCManFM for the file manager, SDDM for the login message, and Leafpad for the text editor. Just like these, it replaced several other heavy applications with lightweight applications.

Ubuntu Flavors are a distinct experience relative to the “plain” Ubuntu Desktop, whether it be a particular desktop environment, a specific intended use case, or a particular theme. The difference between the flavors are in the set of packages installed. The Linux Mint project has forked most of the GNOME accessories to create cross-desktop X-Apps, with the classic separate title bar, menu bar and optional toolbar. This means a fairly consistent feel across the OS, with a handful of CSD apps that stick out. The installer ran fine at 800×600, worked without any issues, and helpfully informed us that the default was to use a swap file. Neither boot disk nor installed system noticed it was in a VM, but neither captured the mouse either.

If you need additional features or have particular requirements, you can customize it or use an already customized version. The following section describes the features of all official Ubuntu flavors. On the other hand, if you dislike both the Unity and GNOME desktops and want something more Windows-like, but you don’t mind GNOME’s CSD windows, then Joshua Peisach’s Ubuntu Cinnamon remix may appeal. To be fair, this was not the first unofficial remix to keep Unity going. That was UMix from TeejeeTech, whose first release was based on Ubuntu 18.04. Xubuntu is the next lightest in RAM usage, although it uses more disk than the default GNOME edition – but then it does bundle apps like email, optical-disk burners and so on.

December 3rd 2019 – v25 Release

You can choose from various window animations and effects available in Compiz. Developers optimized it for faster performance and resource-saving. Just like Kubuntu application names start with the letter k, Lubuntu application names begin with the letter l. After default Ubuntu, Kubuntu is the second most popular flavor of Ubuntu. In this flavor, application names usually start with the letter k.

Unfortunately, the parent distro has dropped support for 32-bit x86 so Lubuntu is now 64-bit only. That means it won’t run on things like old Atom-based netbooks or other 32-bit machines. Kubuntu also installed smoothly, although with one niggle. Like the GNOME edition, it doesn’t notice that it’s in a VM and sets the screen to 800×600 – but that isn’t enough to run the installation program. We had to reboot, pick “Try Kubuntu”, load the full desktop and change the screen resolution to 1024×768, then we could complete the installation. This tutorial will help you take benefits from KDE Connect one of Kubuntu built-in applications that can connect to your Android phone.

It is because there are numerous forum platforms and online resources dedicated to the gnome flavor. You won’t miss videos and blog posts online with resources dedicated to the installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of the Ubuntu Gnome flavor. The Cinnamon remix has potential, but it needs more work. It really needs to be updated to the latest upstream version of Cinnamon. Finally, we’d like to see it replace its GNOME accessory programs with those from the MATE remix to get back classic menu bars and so on. Ubuntu Cinnamon isn’t particularly lightweight, but fractional scaling support could win it fans among folks using a mixture of screens with different pixel densities.

Ubuntu Unity and Ubuntu Cinnamon hit 22 04 too The login screen gives a choice of Wayland or X.org, and defaults to Wayland.
